Ollama is the default way developers run open models on their own computer. It is free for local use, it works from a terminal, and almost every open-source AI tool knows how to talk to it. That is also why people go looking for something else. Some want a polished chat window rather than a command line. Some want the same assistant on a phone. Some simply don't want a background server running all day.

This guide covers five alternatives, what each does better than Ollama, and where Ollama is still the right pick. We make one of them (Loci), so we say so up front and keep our own entry to the same standard as the others.

## What Ollama does well (so you know what you'd give up)

Before switching, be clear about what you'd be giving up:

- **It's built for developers.** Ollama runs a local server, by default on `127.0.0.1:11434`, and other software can call it over an HTTP API. Its own FAQ describes the defaults.
- **The core project is open source.** The ollama/ollama repository is MIT-licensed. The newer desktop app's license is less clearly stated in the project's issue tracker, so check before you redistribute it.
- **It runs on Linux**, including headless servers, and has desktop apps for macOS and Windows.
- **Local use is free.** Ollama also sells cloud plans for larger hosted models, starting at $20 a month.
- **Its model library is huge**, and a single command pulls a model: for example `ollama run gemma4:e4b`.

If you are building an app, scripting against a local model, or running a model on a Linux box, Ollama is hard to beat, and none of the tools below are trying to replace it for that.

## Why people look for an Ollama alternative

The reasons we hear most often:

1. **They want a chat app, not a command line.** Ollama has a desktop app now, but its centre of gravity is still the CLI and API.
2. **They want a phone app.** Ollama runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. There is no Ollama phone app; third-party apps can connect to a server you expose on your network.
3. **They don't know which model fits their machine.** Ollama lets you pull anything; it does not tell you which model suits your memory. (Its library does list download sizes. For example, `gemma4:e4b` is listed at roughly 6.6-9.5 GB. )
4. **They don't want something running at login.** On Mac and Windows, Ollama runs as a login item by default.
5. **They want everything in one place**, including web search without an account or API key. Ollama's web search runs through Ollama's servers and needs an Ollama account.

## The five alternatives

### 1. LM Studio: the best graphical app for exploring models

LM Studio is a desktop app for Mac (Apple silicon), Windows and Linux with a built-in model browser, a chat interface, and a local server that speaks the OpenAI API format. You start it from the app or with the `lms` command-line tool, and the server listens on `localhost:1234` by default.

**Better than Ollama at:** discovering and tuning models in a GUI; letting you see download variants and settings side by side. **Trade-offs:** it is proprietary, not open source, and its terms don't allow redistribution. It is free for personal and work use. LM Studio also has optional paid "Bionic" cloud plans, and a separate iPhone/iPad app (Locally) that connects back to your computer.

### 2. Jan: the open-source desktop app

Jan is an open-source desktop chat app for Windows, macOS (Apple silicon for local models) and Linux. It runs models through an embedded llama.cpp engine, has an OpenAI-compatible local server at `localhost:1337`, supports MCP tools, and can also connect to cloud providers with your own API keys. Its repository says Apache 2.0, and some reviewers note an added attribution request. As of mid-October 2026 its latest release was v0.8.x (v0.8.6 on October 9), and local models no longer run on Intel Macs.

**Better than Ollama at:** being a friendly, open-source chat client out of the box. **Trade-offs:** desktop only. Jan's download page says it is "currently only available on desktop."

### 3. GPT4All: the simple, MIT-licensed document chat

GPT4All, from Nomic, is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Ubuntu (x86-64 only on Linux) under the MIT license. Its main feature is LocalDocs, which indexes folders of text, PDF and Markdown files on your computer so a local model can answer questions about them, entirely on-device.

**Better than Ollama at:** getting a non-technical person chatting with their own documents. **Trade-offs:** release cadence. The latest release we found was v3.10.0, from February 2025 ; we could not confirm that it supports the newest model families such as Gemma 4 or Qwen3.5. Check its release notes before choosing it for new models. It has no phone app.

### 4. AnythingLLM: for document workspaces and agents

AnythingLLM is built around workspaces: you drop documents into a workspace and chat against them, and it has agent skills. It has desktop apps, plus an Android app that pairs with the desktop by QR code.

**Better than Ollama at:** document-heavy work in a structured workspace. **Trade-offs:** more to configure than a plain chat app; if you only want chat, it's more than you need.

### 5. Loci: one app on every device, with a model chosen for you

Loci is the app we make. It is free, has no account, no ads and no subscription, and runs open models (such as Gemma and Qwen) on Mac (Apple silicon; the direct download needs macOS 26.2 or later), Windows 11, iPhone, iPad and Android. On first launch it picks a model that fits your device. Web search is one switch and sends queries straight to search providers; chat, files, pictures and on-device dictation work with no extra setup. Loci Link lets your phone use the models on your Mac or PC, with no account.

**Better than Ollama at:** being a finished assistant for non-developers, including on a phone, and running nothing in the background when you close it. **Trade-offs:** the Mac and Windows builds are labelled beta; there is no Linux version; and Ollama's API surface is wider. Loci does expose a loopback MCP server and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for coding agents on the same Mac while the app is open. If you want a server other machines can reach, or you work on Linux, stay with Ollama. Read our full head-to-head: [Loci vs Ollama](https://askloci.ai/compare/loci-vs-ollama/).

## Which one should you pick?

- **Stay with Ollama** if you're a developer, you run Linux or a server, or other software calls your models.
- **Pick LM Studio** if you want to browse and tune models in a good GUI.
- **Pick Jan** if you want open source and a clean chat app, and don't need a phone app.
- **Pick GPT4All** if your main job is chatting with local documents and you're happy with an older, stable release.
- **Pick AnythingLLM** for document workspaces and agents.
- **Pick Loci** if you want the least setup and the same assistant on your phone.

## FAQ

### What is the best alternative to Ollama?

It depends on why you're leaving. LM Studio is the best graphical model explorer, Jan is a good open-source chat client, GPT4All suits document chat, and Loci is the simplest option if you also want it on a phone. If you're a developer, there is no clear replacement for Ollama's CLI and API.

### Is there an Ollama alternative with a GUI?

Yes. LM Studio, Jan, GPT4All, AnythingLLM and Loci all have graphical chat interfaces. Ollama also has a desktop app on macOS and Windows.

### Is there an Ollama alternative for iPhone or Android?

Ollama has no phone app. Loci runs models on iPhone, iPad and Android. LM Studio's Locally app (iPhone and iPad) connects to models on your own computer. PocketPal is a separate open-source phone app that runs small models on-device.

### Is Ollama open source?

The core Ollama repository is MIT-licensed. The desktop app's license is not clearly stated, so check the repository before redistributing it.

### Is Ollama free?

Running models on your own computer is free. Ollama's cloud models and web search need an Ollama account, and cloud plans start at $20 a month.

### Is there a private AI app for iPhone that works offline?

Ollama has no iPhone app. Loci runs the model on the iPhone itself, and typed chat works after the download with no connection and no account.

### Can I move my models from Ollama to another app?

Most of these apps can import GGUF models from Hugging Face, so the simplest path is to download the model again in the new app rather than reuse Ollama's stored files.
