Here is how the two tools differ, with the sources for each claim.

## Setup

**Ollama.** Download the app from ollama.com/download, or install from the terminal: `curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh` on macOS or Linux, or `irm https://ollama.com/install.ps1 | iex` in Windows PowerShell. Then run a model, for example `ollama run gemma4:e4b`. The model library lists a download size beside each variant, which is useful when you are deciding what fits.

**LM Studio.** Download the installer, open the app, search for a model in Discover, pick a download variant, load it, and chat. Everything happens in the window. The `lms` CLI is optional.

*Winner for beginners:* LM Studio. *Winner for people who live in a terminal:* Ollama.

## Interface and daily use

LM Studio's chat window, model browser and settings panels are its main appeal. You can see download sizes and variants, adjust load parameters, and attach images to vision-capable models (JPEG, PNG and WebP).

Ollama's desktop app on macOS and Windows adds a chat window, drag-and-drop for files and PDFs, and image input for multimodal models. On Linux, it remains command-line only. Much of what Ollama does is behind the scenes: other apps use it as their model backend.

## For developers: APIs and tooling

Both expose local servers.

- **Ollama** serves its own API plus an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and its library page shows examples in cURL, Python and JavaScript. It is the default integration target for many open-source tools.
- **LM Studio** provides OpenAI-compatible endpoints, SDKs, MCP support and the `lms` CLI. It also has `llmster`, a headless mode for machines without a screen.

*Winner:* Ollama for the widest ecosystem and Linux servers; LM Studio if you also want a GUI over the same server.

## License and cost

- **Ollama:** the core repository is MIT-licensed. The newer desktop app's license is not clearly stated in an open GitHub issue, so don't assume it's MIT. Local models are free; cloud plans start at $20 a month.
- **LM Studio:** free for personal and work use. It is proprietary, and its terms bar redistribution, sublicensing, resale and hosting it as a service for others.

If open-source licensing matters, neither is a clean answer for the full desktop experience; Jan and GPT4All are open-source desktop alternatives (see our [Ollama alternatives](https://askloci.ai/compare/ollama-alternative/) and [LM Studio alternatives](https://askloci.ai/compare/lm-studio-alternative/)).

## Models and hardware

Both run GGUF models through llama.cpp-family engines, and both support the current open-model families. For example, Gemma 4 launched on April 2, 2026 with day-one support in Ollama and LM Studio. Ollama's library lists Gemma 4 variants from about 4.6 GB (E2B) to 19-20 GB (31B), with 128K or 256K context windows depending on size.

What neither does for you is choose: you pick the model, and a model that's too big for your memory will be slow or fail to load. LM Studio warns you when a model likely won't fit; Ollama's library lists sizes but doesn't check your machine.

## Privacy

Both run the model on your computer, so conversation text isn't sent to the company in normal local use. The differences are around the edges: Ollama's cloud models and its built-in web search need an Ollama account, and LM Studio's cloud plans and LM Link (the phone connection) need an LM Studio account. Read each company's privacy policy before enabling a cloud feature.

## Which should you pick?

- **Pick Ollama** if you code, script, run a server, use Linux, or want the most widely supported local backend.
- **Pick LM Studio** if you want a graphical model browser and a chat interface, and may also run a local API.
- **Pick either** if you're a developer who wants to try both. They run side by side with no conflict, apart from memory.

## A third option: Loci

Some readers searching "ollama vs lm studio" don't want to manage models at all. That is who we built Loci for, and we're the people who make it, so weigh this section accordingly.

Loci is a free app for Mac (Apple silicon; the direct download needs macOS 26.2 or later), Windows 11, iPhone, iPad and Android with no account, no ads and no subscription. On first launch it sets up a model that fits your device. Web search is one switch, and pictures, files and on-device dictation are built in. A phone can use the models on your Mac or PC with Loci Link.

Where it falls short of both tools: no Linux version; the Mac and Windows builds are labelled beta; you get less control over model parameters than LM Studio gives you; and if you want a server that other machines call, Ollama is the better fit. See our two head-to-head pages: [Loci vs Ollama](https://askloci.ai/compare/loci-vs-ollama/) and [Loci vs LM Studio](https://askloci.ai/compare/loci-vs-lm-studio/).

## FAQ

### Is Ollama or LM Studio better?

Neither is better for everyone. Ollama is better for developers, servers and Linux. LM Studio is better if you want a graphical way to find, download and tune models.

### Is LM Studio faster than Ollama?

We have not benchmarked them against each other, and results vary by model, quantization and hardware, so we're not going to claim a winner. If speed matters, run the same model and prompt in both on your machine.

### Can I use Ollama and LM Studio together?

Yes. They are separate apps with separate servers on different default ports (11434 and 1234), so they can run side by side. Each has its own model storage, so models are downloaded twice.

### Is LM Studio open source?

No. It is free for personal and work use, but proprietary.

### Is Ollama free?

Local use is free. Ollama's cloud models and web search require an account, and cloud plans start at $20 a month.

### Which is easier for beginners?

LM Studio, because everything is in a GUI. A third option, Loci, is simpler still because it picks the model for you.

### Do either of them work offline?

Yes, once a model is downloaded. Downloading models and any online feature need a connection.
